Dear Fellow Residents of Allegany County:
A hallmark of every summer in Allegany County has been the Allegany County Fair & Ag Expo. It’s been a time to see friends, take in sights, and feel the warm summer air. It’s been a way of life for our area children who proudly show off the animals they have raised over the past year. Quality acts like Trace Atkins, the Charlie Daniels Band, Casting Crowns, and Crowder have played from the infield of our racetrack to crowds of thousands.
COVID-19 has created unprecedented difficulties for many of our businesses and has affected our very way of life. As we are beginning to reopen Allegany County in the week and months ahead, our focus will always be on the health and safety of our citizens. Recently, we received notification from the University of Maryland Extension 4-H Program suspending programming through July 31, 2020. With social distancing, mask requirements, and other limits on crowd sizes, we have reluctantly decided to cancel the 2020 Allegany County Fair.
This is the first time since the County Commissioners took ownership of the fairgrounds in 1986 that we will be without a fair. It is also a decision that we do not take lightly; however, we waited until the last possible second to make this choice.
The fair should be about gathering, seeing friends, riding rides, eating cotton candy and smelling funnel cakes. These sights and sounds cannot be replaced by hand sanitizer, masks, and social distancing. As such, we look forward to 2021.
The Board of County Commissioners
